L5R: Intrigue at Kyuden Suzume

Prologue: Suzume Sakura!

Character introduction

Suzume Yoguki, daimyo of the Sparrow Clan, is dead and where once the Sparrow Clan existed now resides another arm of the Spider Clan. The dark lord Daigotsu sheaths his katana and leans over to look at the shocked face of the dead samurai, “Don’t worry Yoguki, we will add your traditions to our own and you clan will live on as vassals of the Spider Clan, and become stronger than you had every imagined.” He moved his hand, as if to flick away the body with a mere gesture and the nearby attendants hurried over and removed Yoguki’s body from before the throne of the Sparrow Clan. Daigotsu gracefully moved over the blood on the ground and sat in the place of power, and looked as if he had always belonged there. “Before we continue with other business, there is the pressing matter of disposing of Yoguki’s legacy, Suzume Sakura, present yourself.”

Sakura looked at the fallen body of her previous daimyo, feeling neither sadness, anger, or even pity. He was weak, he should have known it would end this way. Somewhat surprised, but all the more delighted to be summoned by the daimyo of her new overlords, she approaches, and prostrates herself before Daigotsu. “How may I serve you Daigotsu-dono?” She asks simply.

“Gather together a small group of my followers and seek out the remaining pockets of resistance here in the Sparrow province. The responsibility to keep our machinations from the ears of our enemies is in your hands. Go, and do as I command of you.” Daigotsu intones this task with the greatest sincerity, some shiver, others take a keen interest in Sakura now that she has been given this great task.

Sakura does not move from her prostrate position. The task is a gateway for her to rise in the ranks, yet it is correspondingly is difficult as well. “Are there any limits on whom I may choose to aid me in this task? And do you have any preference on how should I deal with the stubborn fools once I find them?” It was probably not the best of ideas to starts asking questions from her new daimyo right off the bat, but she was not going to do a bad job because lack of precise instructions. She’d rather offend the man by asking questions than doing something undesirable.

“Suzume-san, you are only limited by your ingenuity. As far as your unmanageable extended family, you may do whatever you wish with them, I shouldn’t have to remind you of what should be done with the enemies of your lord. Usharo-san,” Daigotsu finishes by motioning for the other courtier to step forward.

“The Suzume renegades are spread out in several small bands around the castle, and are making a point to disrupt our movements. Recently there have been attacks from within the tunnel system under the castle, considering their extent and the Suzume’s familiarity, we’re sure they are using these tunnels to their advantage. At this moment supplies for our future campaigns are being stockpiled in a discrete section of the tunnels, perhaps, Suzume-san, you would find it expedient to recruit out of the ranks of those who have a familiarity with the tunnel system and are eager to crush the enemies of our lord Daigotsu.”

“Thank you for this honor Daigotsu-dono, I will show my kin the… errors of their way.” A small smile spread on her lips. Oh yes. Finally, the Sparrow will rise above their pathetic stations. “I will start gathering the necessary personnel for the task immediately.” First up, minions. If Daigotsu does not say anything else, Sakura slowly backs away from him, and approaches one of the lesser bushi standing guard. “You there, who is in charge of the stock piling operations? I will need to speak to them.”

The bushi bows slightly, “Of course, Suzume-sama, Chuda Jin and Daigotus Gozu have been given the task of over-seeing the stockpile, at this moment in fact.” He cocks his head and turns it slightly toward Sakura. “Do you require anything else?”

Sakura thinks for a moment, but the two names do not seem to be familiar. Not surprising, seeing as until recently she has been removed from the going ons of the Spider Clan, what with infiltrating the Sparrow and what now. “Exactly where can I find them samurai-san? Also, can you tell me a little bit about these two samurai? I wish to use them to their fullest potential, and for that, I need to know them a little bit.”

He raises his eyebrows and thinks for a moment, “Probably in the southern bowels of the castle Suzume-sama. I’m not too familiar with them myself, shouldn’t be hard though, as I hear that the stockpile is going to be quite prodigious, so there will be a long line of workers, I’m sure.” He shrugs and then continues, “I can’t say much about either men, other than that they are both very disturbed people; quite a pair, really, you’ll know them immediately upon arrival.” The bushi clears his throat. “Now, if you’ll excuse me Suzume-sama, I am required to go on patrol shortly.”

Prologue: Suzume Sakura!

Sakura raises her eyebrows at the description. A disturbed pair of Spider clansmen? If their clansmates thought them strange, she needs to be ready mentally. “Carry on your duties, thank you for your help.” She adds in an afterthought, and slowly starts towards the southeastern tunnels, looking for the disturbed duo.
